If any of these sound like your organisation, this is the right course.

  • Groundworks and civils contractors running backhoe loaders
  • Drainage, utilities and highways teams
  • Farms and estates using a 180° machine for loading and trenching
  • Experienced operators who need a card for site access
  • Employers verifying competence after taking on new staff

What's covered

Every session is practical, and tailored to the way your team actually works.

  • Operator responsibilities, site safety and exclusion zones
  • Pre-use inspection, defect reporting and machine documentation
  • Controls, machine set-up and travelling safely
  • Excavating to a profile, trenching and backfilling
  • Working near underground services, structures and excavation edges
  • Loading vehicles and handling spoil
  • Quick hitches, bucket changes and attachment safety
  • Shutting down, parking and securing for transport
  • Theory knowledge test and practical assessment

How it works

Step 1Tell us what you need

Machines, numbers and any deadlines — a new contract, a site audit or a card about to lapse.

Step 2Pre-assessment & quote

We establish whether operators are novice, experienced or due a refresher, then confirm dates and a fixed price.

Step 3We come to you

Training and testing run on your site, on your machines, around your shifts.

Step 4Cards & renewals

NPORS registration follows the test, and we remind you before anything expires.

Above or below 5 tonnes — which do we need?

N201 is endorsed by machine weight, and the card records which. Match it to the machines your operators actually use; if you run both, we can cover both.

Is this the same as a 360 excavator card?

No. A 180° machine (typically a backhoe loader) is N201; a slewing 360° machine is N202. They are separate categories and separate cards.

How long does novice training take?

NPORS publishes up to 10 days as the maximum recommended novice duration. Most employers send operators with some experience, so the real answer comes from a pre-assessment — often 1–2 days for an experienced worker test.

Can you train on our machines?

Yes, and we prefer it. Operators are assessed on the machines and ground conditions they work on every day.
